Vea Fashionably Responsible
When you think of “ tires” in Lebanon, the first thing that would come up to your mind is “ burning tires blocking highways during protests”. We never had an eco-friendly idea of up cycling tires until the implementation of Vea’s brilliant and history-changing idea in the fashion world.
Despite the unstable political and economic conditions in Lebanon, we always find a way to keep up with the latest fashion trends. Lebanon indeed is the “ Paris of the Middle East” and almost everyone is considered a fashionsita for being “ Toujours à la mode “
The Co-Founder Patrick El Zoghbi started his journey as a entrepreneur when he, along with 15 other participants won the USAID competition and got funds to start their own social & sustainable business. In fact, Patrick graduated with a mechanical engineering degree, but he always asked his father who was a tailor to help him craft hard drive cases and other similar things. His passion along with the fact that he had been a scout in the Saint Joseph School gave him a special connection with the environment.
Becoming a first mover is not enough to ensure the ongoing success of a business. This is where Paula Yaacoubian , a popular journalist and environmental advocate, stepped in and supported Vea all the way. Not only did she become the “ Brand Ambassador “ of Vea, but she had a special line launched by her name. The profits from her collection went as a donation for reforestation in Lebanon and several other ngo’s and organizations. Vea is considered highly eco-friendly because they even advertise themselves through sustainable means like launching events and staying active through social media.
According to Mrs. Paula Yaacoubian
“ being luxurious and elegant does not mean taking a loan to afford buying Chanel , Louis Vuitton , and these cliché brands. The most important and luxurious thing is being socially aware of the environment.”
So, Vea™…. is what exactly?
The name vea was extracted from the Latin word HEVEA , which means rubber tree.
Vea™ ’s unique concept is up cycling tires of motorcycles, bikes, car, trucks, and seat belts ( with a partnership with Bridgestone) to produce purses, wallets, belts, laptop cases accessories, home deco and a jewelry line in the near future. They are trying to create a new fashion trend in a sustainable way to preserve our environment and raise awareness of the tires hazardous effects on human health as well.
The bags and accessories have different stories and these are reflected by the materials used to produce them. Vea is a collaborative that consists of fashion designers Ghita Abi Hana and Joyce Saadeh, Vea’s skilled tailors, as well as the Société Saint Vincent de Paul – Liban. There are plenty of options for customizing the bags like engraving a name, initials, date, or even adding diamonds. If you pay real attention to the items, they have different quotes on each purse or clutch, and on the inside there is the number of grams of rubber that they have saved by producing this final output. On the website you can also track the total sum of saved rubber!
